Workplace Bullying

That workplace bullying is endemic in the workplace is revealed by the difficulties involved in convincing managers that it exists at all. While survey evidence suggests that over half the workforce has experienced workplace bullying, one survey of employers showed that 93 out of over 130 organisations were not dealing with a single case (IRS, 1999). While the use of disciplinary measures to control the workforce has generally increased throughout the UK public services, its use by employers against bullies is still very rare – further evidence of the really existing management practice of accepting bullying as part of labour management.

Mediation

Gemini Solutions Mediators recently conducted a mediation session that provided a space for the parties to engage in a greater depth of communication. The mediation involved two employees of a government agency, the Deputy CEO and the Section Manager.  Ruth, the Section Manager, requested the mediation. She wanted Oliver, the Deputy CEO, to rescind a letter of reprimand that she received for insubordination and poor performance.
